How to find and select data validations in Google Sheets

Choose 'Data validation' to find and select cells with data validation

Why you need this tool

Managing data validation rules in large or complex Google Sheets can be challenging. This tool makes it easy to find and select cells with validation rules, helping you ensure data accuracy and consistency. Whether you’re auditing existing rules, updating validations, or troubleshooting errors, this feature simplifies your workflow.

What are data validations?

Data validations are rules applied to cells to control the type of data that can be entered. For example, you can restrict a cell to accept only numbers, dates, or values from a predefined list. Understanding where these validations are applied is essential for maintaining data integrity in your spreadsheets.

How to use the tool

First, you need to install the Select Special addon for Google Sheets. Visit the instruction page to learn how to do it step by step.

1. Select the range or scope

You can specify the scope for finding data validations:

  • All on the sheet: Searches for all data validation rules across the entire sheet, ensuring no rule is missed.
  • Same as selected cell: Searches for all data validation rules identical to those applied to the currently active cell, allowing you to locate similar rules quickly.

2. Execute the selection

After choosing your desired scope, press the Select button in the add-on interface. The tool will select all cells with data validations based on your selection, enabling you to review, edit, or analyze them efficiently.
