How to find and select column differences in Google Sheets

Choose 'Column differences' to find differences in column

Why you need this tool

When comparing large datasets in Google Sheets, it can be challenging to identify differences in columns manually. This tool makes it easy to find and highlight columns where the values differ from one dataset to another, saving you time and effort.

What are column differences?

Column differences are identified by comparing the first cell in a column with all the other cells in that same column. If the first cell contains a formula, the tool compares the formulas, not the values. If any other cell’s formula or value does not match the first cell’s formula or value, it is marked as a difference.

This approach allows you to:

  • Quickly spot any discrepancies within a column.
  • Ensure that all cells in a column match a reference value or formula.
  • Easily identify errors or inconsistencies in the data.

How to use the tool

First, you need to install the Select Special addon for Google Sheets. Visit the instruction page to learn how to do it step by step.

1. Select the column to compare

Choose the columns where you want to find differences. The first cell in this column will be used as the reference value or formula for comparison.

2. Execute the selection

Press the Select button in the add-on interface. The discrepancies will be clearly marked, making it easy for you to spot and address any errors or inconsistencies within the column.
